Your VantageScore Can Now Get You a Better Mortgage
Conventional loans now accept VantageScore — meaning more buyers qualify and more buyers save money at closing.
📰 Industry Update (April 29, 2026): Mosaic Mortgage Team now accepts both FICO® and VantageScore® for conventional loans and FHA Streamline refinances — automatically running both when a credit report is pulled so you always get the better number.
What Is VantageScore — and Why Does It Matter for Your Mortgage?
If you've ever checked your credit score on Credit Karma, NerdWallet, or your bank's app, you've likely seen your VantageScore. A credit model developed jointly by the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion).
For years, mortgage lenders exclusively used FICO scores, which often produced different and sometimes lower numbers than VantageScore. That meant many buyers were being evaluated by a score they'd never even seen.
That's changing. We now accept both scoring models for conventional loans, and we use whichever one puts you in the best position.
Quick example: A buyer has a FICO score of 685 but a VantageScore of 714. With the old system, they're quoted pricing at the 685 tier. Under the new system, we use their VantageScore, and they get meaningfully better loan pricing. Same buyer, better deal.
Who Benefits Most from VantageScore Mortgages?
VantageScore tends to score certain borrowers higher than FICO. If any of these describe you, it's worth finding out which score works in your favor:
🏁
First-Time BuyersVantageScore can score borrowers with shorter credit histories more favorably than FICO.
📈
Recent ImproversIf you've paid down debt or fixed errors recently, VantageScore may reflect those changes faster.
💰
Buyers Who Already QualifyEven if you qualify with FICO, a higher VantageScore can lower your rate through better LLPAs.
🔄
Thin Credit FilesBuyers with few credit accounts — but responsible history — often score better with VantageScore.
VantageScore vs. FICO: What's the Difference?
They're both 300–850 scales, but they calculate differently
Both FICO and VantageScore range from 300 to 850, but they weigh factors like payment history, credit utilization, and account age differently. This is why the same person can have a 660 FICO and a 690 VantageScore — or vice versa.
The score on Credit Karma is almost always VantageScore
Most free credit monitoring apps show VantageScore. Until recently, that score had no bearing on your mortgage — which caused confusion when buyers came to us with a "great score" that differed from what we pulled. Now that VantageScore counts, what you see on those apps is actually more relevant.
We pull both scores automatically — at no cost
When you work with Mosaic Mortgage Team, both your FICO and VantageScore are pulled at no cost. We compare the two and use whichever one gives you the better outcome — lower rate, better loan terms, or broader eligibility.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Does VantageScore work for all mortgage types?
At Mosaic Mortgage Team, we accept VantageScore for conventional loans and FHA Streamline refinances. FHA Streamline refis are already designed to be low-hassle — and being able to use your VantageScore makes qualifying even easier. Standard FHA purchase loans, VA, and USDA loans still use FICO. We'll always compare both scores and tell you which loan type and scoring model puts you in the best position.
Will running both scores hurt my credit?
No. When we pull your credit for a mortgage, it counts as a single inquiry regardless of how many scoring models are run. Both FICO and VantageScore are pulled from the same credit report pull — no double hit.
My Credit Karma score is higher than what a lender pulled before. Why?
Credit Karma shows VantageScore, while most past lender pulls used FICO. The two models weigh your credit history differently, which can cause noticeable differences. Now that VantageScore is accepted for conventional loans, your Credit Karma score is more meaningful than ever in the mortgage process.
What's a good VantageScore for a mortgage?
Generally, a VantageScore of 620 or higher opens doors for conventional loan eligibility. Higher scores (700+) unlock better pricing tiers. Contact us and we'll tell you exactly where you stand and what options are available.
How do I find out which score is better for me?
Simple — we pull both for free and compare them. It takes a few minutes and there's no obligation. Reach out below and we'll run the numbers.
I was turned down before because of my credit score. Should I try again?
Yes, it's absolutely worth revisiting. If your VantageScore is higher than your FICO score, you may now qualify for a loan you didn't before — or qualify for better terms. A lot has changed, and we're happy to take a fresh look.
